3 killed, 3 hurt in U.S. Route 89 crash in Cache County

CACHE COUNTY, UT – A two-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 89 in Logan Canyon claimed the lives of three people and injured three Wednesday.

According to Fox 13 Now, a driver of a Kia Rio was driving in the southbound lanes and then into the northbound lanes, hitting a Ford Excursion.

Officials believe the driver of the Excursion, 29-year-old Kylan Romrell, could have been “driving on or near the centerline of the road” when the Kia swerved and collided with the Excursion.

Cache County deputies found open bottles of alcohol in Romrell’s vehicle. He was tested for sobriety and was arrested for DUI, and then booked into the Cache County jail. Another offense of his included “three counts of negligently operating a vehicle resulting in death.” In addition, he has been arrested for a DUI in the last decade.

Romrell did sustain minor injuries, but it is unclear if he needed to be taken to a hospital; he was the only occupant from the Excursion.

There were a total of five occupants from the Kia, one of whom was a baby boy. The infant was transported to a hospital for serious injuries. An unidentified man, a passenger, was airlifted to a hospital for severe injuries.

Three others from the Kia succumbed to fatal injuries, two of whom were identified as Jerika and Jordan Erikson.
